Block paving remains one of the most popular options for surfacing driveways. That's because block paving combines an aesthetically pleasing quality look with a hard-wearing, durable surface which can be designed to create a bespoke driveway by using different style and colour blocks. The blocks can also be laid in different pattens, colours and shades to create a truly bespoke design.
But, as with all driveways, ensuring that they are built to last depends on how they are laid. The sub base on which the blocks will be laid needs to be dug to the correct depth with quality crushed aggregate compacted to ensure that the finished driveway will not sag under the weight of vehicles parked on it. There also needs to be adequate drainage installed and, to ensure that the blocks do not move where they are not abutting against the wall of your house for example, and there needs to be a properly constructed border of blocks which are concreted into the ground to prevent movement. That's why it pays to have your driveway built to a high standard by Avenue Driveways.
It's what we do and it's all we do, quality driveways that are built to last. Ask us for a free quote today!
We use only quality materials from Britain's leading suppliers
It’s a popular choice
Block paving has long been a popular choice of driveway surfacing material with homeowners across the UK for many years now. One of the main reasons for that is that block paving, when installed by block paving specialists like Avenue Driveways, is attractive, durable and easy to maintain.
Because blocks come in a range of styles and colours, a driveway can be installed to look bespoke. It will certainly add kerb appeal and value to your home.
It’s not the cheapest option of driveway surfacing material, but it is a quality option. And if anyone in your home happens to be a wheelchair user, just think how much more wheelchair friendly block paving will be to move on as opposed to gravel.
As for the question ‘how much will a block paving driveway cost me?’, the answer to that is that will all depends on the size of the area to be covered. Avenue Driveways are block paving specialists working throughout East Anglia and surrounding counties. We don’t compromise on quality workmanship because the last thing any homeowner wants is to see their block paving driveway start to sag or the blocks to start moving a few months down the line. When we install a block paving driveway, we make sure it will stand the test of time and still look amazing many years down the line.
By ensuring the blocks are properly laid on a strong, durable sub base and are abutted up against a solid border properly cemented in place where there is no other abutment such as the wall of a house, our blocks will never move and will be able to cope with cars, vans or heavier vehicles parked on them.

As the leading block paving driveway specialists in East Anglia, Cambridgeshire and Essex,
Avenue Driveways are often asked how to keep block paving driveways still looking great years from now. Here are our top recommendations:
1. Choose the right contractor: Our first essential piece of advice is choose the right block paving specialist to carry out your driveway installation. Not all paving contractors are the same. Some are better than others and a select few like Avenue Driveways are excellent. Avenue Driveways are paving experts committed to top quality driveway installations. We never cut corners, we use only the very best quality materials and every single driveway installation is done right - installed to the very highest standards. By choosing Avenue Driveways, you know that your driveway will stand the test of time and we guarantee all new driveway installations for 10 years.
2. How do you ensure that your driveways last? If a block paving driveway is poorly installed, then you will quickly have problems such as sagging where the blocks start to sink because the base of the driveway has not been properly prepared; the blocks start to move because the driveway is not anchored into place by a border which has been properly secured in place or weeds start to grow through the gaps of the blocks because no anti-weed membrane has been installed.
Only ever choose a reputable driveway specialist such as Avenue Driveways to carry out the installation. That way you can be sure that you will never have issues of blocks moving or sagging. That’s because when we install a new driveway, we dig out the old surface (if it’s a replacement driveway) and lay and compact MOT Type 1 crushed aggregate to a depth of 150mm. The solid base ensures that the driveway remains stable and is able to take the weight of vehicles parked on it.
Another important part of securing a block paved driveway in place is edge restraints. This is where we typically will use block edgings which have been secured in place usually with concrete. The only edges where this is not necessary is where a new driveway butts up against a solid wall such as the side of your house although we create the border effect around the entire driveway for design reasons.
3. How can I keep my new block paved driveway looking as good as the day it was laid? We recommend that you brush your driveway regularly every few months or so using a stiff brush and a bucket of water. We don’t recommend the use of acid-based products as this can weaken the colour pigments of your blocks. Often, block paving will develop a white coloured bloom known as ‘efflorescence’ which is caused by rain water reacting with the concrete in the blocks. Whilst this dissolves naturally, you can also simply hose down your driveway to remove it.
4. How do I get rid of oil stains? If oil leaks onto your block paving driveway, we recommend soaking up as much of the spill as possible using a towel or even something like cat litter before scrubbing the area with detergent and a stiff brush.
5. What if my block paving driveway starts to sag or the blocks to crack? If your new driveway is installed by Avenue Driveways, it won’t. We ensure that your driveway is laid onto a solid, well prepared base of crushed and compacted aggregate. If, in the extremely unlikely event that a driveway installed by us started to sag, we would repair it or replace it under guarantee. Similarly, we use only the best quality materials including the blocks, so the chances of them ever cracking are extremely slim. However, if, in the unlikely event they did, then it is a simple matter of replacing the cracked blocks which we would do under our 10-year guarantee.
6. Should my block paving driveway have drainage? Avenue Driveways recommend the installation of drainage channels (also known as trench or linear drains) as block paving isn’t a permeable surface like resin and therefore doesn’t allow water to drain away naturally. Water will puddle instead unless there is a slope. To prevent puddling or even the risk of flooding, we install quality linear drainage channels.
